What is the best season to visit Mikurashima?
First of all, Mikurashima dolphins are on Mikurashima all year round.
So, no matter when you go, the number of dolphins itself does not change. (Approximately 150 in 2021)
During summer, weekends, and consecutive holidays, the number of people increases, and dolphins tend to avoid people as they get tired of them.
Dolphin swim is also waiting for the number of ships.
If you want to play with dolphins a lot, the best season is when there are few people It will be!
To put it bluntly Weekdays except July and August is!
Mikurashima has a limited number of lodgings, so no matter what month you go, the number of people stays the same on weekends.
There are more boats from Miyakejima during summer, consecutive holidays, and weekends.
The weather depends on your luck when you go.Please see the docking rate as a reference.
Dolphin swim seasonality
If you want to have a lot of fun with dolphins, the first and last months are April and November!
They will wait for April when humans come to the sea that was closed during the winter for the first time in a while! In November, many dolphins come to visit us as if they are reluctant to say goodbye.
The playfulness of the dolphins at this time is about 10 times different than in summer!
In April, you might be able to see humpback whales coming north from Okinawa!
The water temperature is low, so be sure to protect yourself from the cold!
Newborn babies can be seen from May to June
Dolphins give birth throughout the year, but especially during this time.
However, please do not approach or chase the baby from here and watch it from a distance.
Except for Golden Week, there are few people, and the number of dolphin boats is also small, so you can enjoy it in a relaxed mood.
Personally, I recommend June to early July.
From June to July, you can see the flowers of Mikuramiya stag beetle and Saku lily.
If you are aiming for a time when the water is clear and the sea is calm, late July to September
If the Kuroshio Current comes in, the transparency is high and the water temperature is warm, so you can swim comfortably.
However, at this time of year, there are too many people and the dolphins tend to pass by.It is a so-called salt correspondence 💦
We call people who are cold-hearted people like summer dolphins (laughs).
There are many dolphin boats during consecutive holidays and summer, so dolphin boat traffic can occur.
There is a rule that you cannot interrupt other boats when they are swimming with dolphins, so there are many boats waiting in line where dolphins are. Your chances of swimming with dolphins may be a little less.
However, it all depends on the dolphin's mood.
If you are a beginner (if you are lucky, the sea will be calm), we recommend this time of year.
Fight against typhoons from August to October🌀?
This time of year is a game whether you hit a typhoon or not. (The typhoon starts in April, so I don't know when it will come.)
The timing, number, and course of typhoons vary from year to year, so it all depends on your luck.
If you don't hit it, the water temperature is still warm (the water temperature in November is warmer than during Golden Week and about the same as in June).
Unlike summer, dolphins are often in a good mood, so you can enjoy plenty.
I really like this season, but don't forget to make a reservation for the helicopter on your way back, as the ship service rate is also going down.
From November onwards is also the migration season for humpback whales, so if you're lucky, you might even see them!
Dolphin swimming on Mikurashima is open from 3/15 to 11/15.
